Talk about a wipe out. Three boaters cruising a 35-foot Donzi powerboat in rough waters were captured jumping clear 40 feet into the air over a wave around Ocean Beach, San Francisco. Pete Koff, 41, was just chillin’ in the beach, recording his buddy out surfing when he saw the vessel in an area generally avoided.

“I saw the powerboat sitting out on the water in the biggest swell of the year,” Koff said. “The waves were 20 feet high, and I thought to myself, ‘that’s a really bad place to be sitting.’ I have been surfing for 15 years on Ocean Beach and I have never seen anyone there.”

At first Koff kept filming his friend surfing, but when the boat drove by, he turned his attention toward it for about 30 seconds—and caught an amazing moment. As the craft climbed one steep wave after another, it reached a 20-foot-high crest while the driver accelerated, trying to ramp over it. The boat climbed the giant wave at a 45-degree angle and leaped entirely out of the water. Koff can be heard expressing his amazement, gambling that at least one of the boaters had broken a limb.

And it turned out he wasn’t too far from the truth. One of the three seamen was thrown from his seat when the boat splashed back into the ocean with such force it actually split down the middle. Fortunately, the three men were able to reach land, and the injured passengers were taken to the hospital where they were treated for broken bones and bruising.

Koff was in total disbelief.

“The guy driving it must have been trying to show off which was dangerous and he really accelerated and shot up the wave,” he said. “I think he thought it was going to break so he needed to get past it, but as the boat shot up the wave it was thrown around 40 feet into the air.

“It almost landed vertically and then went flat, which is quite lucky as they all remained on board. Everyone could have died. When it landed, he sat there for a couple of minutes and I know the people on board were injured. The boat split right down the middle but the guy managed to get it back to shore.”

No amount of money can buy the new Jaguar speedboat. The ultra-luxurious Concept Speedboat was created as an accessory for the British automaker’s new XF Sportbrake to appeal to clientele’s sense of adventure.

Jaguar

“We recognize that both our existing and future customers enjoy diverse and active lifestyles,” said Jaguar design director Ian Callum. “With the launch of the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake, we had an opportunity to create a vision of how our design philosophy might be applied to an alternative product, in which speed and beauty are also priorities. The Concept Speedboat looks powerful. It follows, in so many ways, the idea of a traditional speedboat but with the sleek and fast characteristics of what you would expect from a Jaguar car.”

Jaguar

The sleek craft includes a gel-coated fiberglass hull finished with a natural teak deck. The carbon fiber fin is reminiscent of Jaguar’s D-Type, and the jungle cat logo leaps off the back deck while the fuel filler caps were inspired by the Series 1 XJ. At 20 feet long, the Concept Speedboat’s red cabin seats three and would certainly appeal to any Jaguar fan. Jaguar sought out yacht design firm Ivan Erdevicki Naval Architecture & Yacht Design Inc. as well as designers at Seventy Seven Design to help achieve its vision.

Jaguar

Don’t get too excited, however. The company has no plans to use the vessel for anything more than a showpiece, demonstrating what its design department is capable of imagining for the sea.

The 2008 Bladerunner BR RIB 35 speedboat that carried David Beckham and the Olympic flame is going up for bid at Mercedes-Benz World Brooklands in Surrey Dec. 3.

Bonhams will auction the heavily-customized boat, which Beckham drove down the River Thames for the last leg of the Olympic torch’s journey to Olympic Park. Approximately 900 million people watched July 27 as the all-star soccer player, former England captain and Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder drive the “Torchbearer,” fitted with four dummy rockets and smoke canisters, a water jet bar and LED lights to boot, during London’s spectacular opening ceremony.

Bonhams now calls the boat the “ultimate souvenir” and expects the boat to sell for about £250,000. The boat will be sold complete with all the bells and whistles added for the Olympic ceremony.

“After a fantastic summer of British sporting success, Bonhams is proud to offer for sale the ultimate souvenir from the Olympic opening ceremony – what has been dubbed ‘the greatest show on earth,’” said Bonham’s director of UK Mortor Cars Tim Schofield.
